For more information on how to protect your land for future generations, please call (207)-734-6907. VolunteerBecome a preserve stewardIf you enjoy walking in the woods, you would make a great preserve steward! We are currently looking for volunteer stewards for several IIT preserves. This involves visiting the preserve on a regular basis (minimum of once per season), making observations, taking photos with our camera, and filing a report with IIT staff. We offer a training session for new preserve stewards each spring. This is a very rewarding way to give back to the community! Monitor an easement IIT has a thriving volunteer easement monitoring program led by trustee Sue Stafford. We are continually acquiring new easement properties, and thus have an ongoing need for new easement monitors. Each monitor is assigned an easement property, which they visit at least once per year. Volunteers walk the property, fill out a monitoring form, take photos, and return their findings to the IIT office. This is a very minimal time commitment but is a huge help to IIT! Keep an eye out for invasive plants Invasive plants are an increasing problem on Islesboro, and threaten many of the conservation values on our preserves. We're looking for trained spotters to keep an eye out for these invaders on their regular walks and explorations around the island. Each spring, we offer a free training session on how to do this, and an introduction to Islesboro's most common invasive species. This can be done as a casual activity on your regular walks - no forms or photos required. Just a simple phone call to IIT if you suspect that any invasive species are present. Monitor water quality IIT sponsors a volunteer marine water quality monitoring group that has collected data around Islesboro for over a decade. We meet once in the spring for training, and then take monthly measurements at eight different sites around the island. Each volunteer or team signs up for one month between April and October. The entire monitoring process takes around three hours - a small commitment of time, but a great way to safeguard clean water for your community! Share your expertise If you have background in a field related to IIT's work and want to share your knowledge with others, we'd love to hear from you. We are always looking for naturalists, photographers, woods-wise individuals to clear trails, people to introduce kids to clam digging and lobstering - the list goes on. These are just a few ideas! please call us if you have a talent that you would like to share. please call (207)-734-6907, or email Aaron Megquier |
